Strengths your team identify.
You should have at least 5 strengths for your team or ward. The
strengths might be related to the quality of patient/client care,
commitment of staff, team working, cleanliness etc.
Now record a similar
number of
Weaknesses. These are things which you are not
as good at as you would like to be or need to be to deliver a
safe, effective and quality service.
The next step is to
consider how the strengths and weaknesses relate to the external
environment in which you deliver your service. Think about the
opportunities that are emerging, either ones that you are aware of
and which have been discussed by Senior Managers in your
organisation or ones which can fall under the following headings:
Social, Technological,
Environment, Economic, Political
(This is known as a
STEEP analysis)
Opportunities may
include ways in which services could be developed or redesigned to
improve the quality of care, or ways in which you can use
resources more effectively. (CLICK)
Ask the team to then
identify the
Threats which they
believe could or will present difficulties for your service. These
might include new legislation requiring changes in practice, any
part of your service which carries significant risk, financial
constraints etc.
After recording all of
these on your SWOT Analysis template you should now have an
up-to-date picture of how your service ‘fits’ its environment.

potential areas for improvement. Click here to access the
