Regional Record for the Supervision of Midwifery Practice

Northern Ireland (NI)'s Public Health Agency (PHA), in its role as the Local Supervising Authority (LSA), has responsibility for ensuring that statutory supervision of all midwives is exercised to a satisfactory standard within its geographical boundary.

In 2009, Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council for Nursing and Midwifery (NIPEC) was approached by the LSAMO to facilitate the development of a regional document for the review of the supervision of midwifery practice. To take this work forward, a Steering Group was set up, composed of nominated supervisors of midwives (SoM) - this group was complemented by a number of focus groups, whose membership came from a broad spectrum of midwives from within Northern Ireland.

Guidance - To assist in the use of the Regional Record, guidance has been developed

Update

Following a period of implementation and use, it was agreed as part of the initiative to review the toolkit in terms of its utility and ‘fit for purpose’. This review was conducted via several engagement workshops which NIPEC facilitated in August and September 2011. These documents have been revised and amended and it is anticipated that a further review of these will take place during 2014.
